Electrical problem
1987 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

car wont start, it makes the noises like its going to start when I turn the key but doesnt, ive gotten lucky and its started a couple times but it will only stay on as long as I have the accelerator down and as soon as it gets around 2000 rpms the engine chokes and dies, I just recently replaced the alternator barely a couple months ago and tried charging the battery and jump starting it but none of it works.

I have had a Cabriolet do the same thing you are describing. What I found was the coolant temp sesor (the one you unplug when setting the timing) had failed. The books that I have read say this will not prevent the engine from running but it did.
To find out if this is what has happened unplug the temp sensor, it should be the Blue plug on the water outlet above the oil filter. Then try and start it. If it runs then change that sensor.

Let me know what happens, CwazyWabbit
