I need to replace the vavle cover gasket and what looks like the cover for the camshaft is in the way. It has a VW logo on it and in order to pull off the Valve cove this other cover on the front of the engine has to be removed. How do I do this.

Is it on 16 valve motor or not?

If it's not the 16 valve then do the following

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the throttle cable, crankcase ventilation hose and any other components in the way.
3. Remove the nut at the front of the upper camshaft belt cover. If necessary, remove the cover.
4. Remove the nuts securing the cover, then lift the cover from the engine.
Discard the old gaskets. This is also a good time to clean the inside of the camshaft cover and oil baffle plate of any sludge deposits.

To install:

6. Install the cover on the engine. Use a new gasket without using any additional sealer. Torque the nuts to 87 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
7. Connect the throttle cable and any other components necessary. Connect the negative battery cable.
8. Start the engine and check for leaks.
