2000 Vauxhall Astra Power Steering

My Power Steering has been playing up.

When I park up I have to turn my steering wheel to the left. When I have started the car it has no power steering even with engine running. I have to pull the steering wheel completely to the left and then turn the car on and see if the I can hear the powering steering motor, if this does not work I try again till the steering wheel moves freely and I can hear the pump kick in.

What do I need to do to fix this?

Replace the alternator .. this controls power steering on this vehicle ...and this is a common fault ...
