1994 Vauxhall Astra Smoke from rear and excessive oily resi

Just driven back from Manchester to Grimsby today at motorway speeds, and was repeatedly told by other motorists that the car was smoking, the whole of the back of the car was covered in an oily residue too. This only happened whilst on the motorway and not while driving around town.
