My vehicle listed above shakes (not terribly, but enough to be concerning) while in gear, and shakes much less when in park or neutral.

This happened suddenly, as I parked the truck after getting home from work then by the next morning it was shaking.

There also is a kind of knocking (low, almost like rod-knock) noise coming from the muffler. The timing, water pump, and radiator were all replaced within a year. No knocking noises were observed near the engine.

Hi,

Have you noticed any power loss? I ask because if you are hearing a noise from the exhaust, it could be the internal portion of the catalytic converter moving around. If it restricts the airflow, it will cause the engine to run poorly. Note that when the vehicle is in gear if there is an issue, you are more likely to feel the vibration.

Take a rubber mallet and tap on the exhaust system at different points to see if you can recreate the noise. Also, if it is loud enough for you to record, please do so and upload it for me to hear. Additionally, take a look through this link, it explains common symptoms related to a failing converter:

Also, an engine vacuum leak can cause a rough idle. Check to see if anything is disconnected or leaking.

Here is a link that explains how it is done:

Let me know.

Take care,

joe

Hi,

I'm not hearing anything from the exhaust as far as a knocking sound. Try taking a rubber mallet to the exhaust in different places to see if you hear anything rattling inside. It did sound a little odd when you placed it in gear. Have you noticed any power loss or lower fuel economy?

Let me know.

Joe

There's a slight ticking noise before I get in the SUV. Once I place the vehicle in drive, the ticking gets louder. I'll take a mallet to the exhaust in the morning and see what happens. As far as power loss/fuel economy goes, nothing noticeable thus far. The vehicle drove beautifully up until a few days ago.

Hi,

If you hear a ticking, I wonder if it could be an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold. Check that area when you check the exhaust.

Let me know.
