Hello, I have the car listed above XE model. How can I change the transmission fluid? I am just planning on doing a drain and fill but really do not know how. My owners manual says I do not have to change it because it is a sealed transmission, but I would like to at least do a drain and fill. Also, how do I check the condition of the fluid if there is no dipstick?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

To drain the fluid, you will need to remove the transmission oil pan. The filter will be the first thing you see when its removed, so I would suggest replacing it at that time.

Here are the directions for removing the pan and replacing the filter. Open the pan slowly, allowing one side of it to be looser than the other. That way, you can keep the fluid draining on the looser side.

Removal Procedure

1. Remove transaxle oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement (See: Fluid Pan, A/T > Removal and Replacement > Oil Pan Replacement).
2. Remove the oil filter. Use a long screwdriver in order to pry the oil filter neck out of the seal.
3. Check the oil filter seal for damage or wear.
4. As needed, remove the seal using the J 6125-1B and the J 23129.

Installation Procedure
1. Install a new seal, as needed. Before installing, coat the new seal with a small amount of petroleum jelly.
2. Install a new filter into the case.
3. Install transaxle oil pan.

To refill the system, first locate the fill plug. See pic 3. It will be on the engine side of the transmission. Remove the plug and fill the transmission with the correct fluid until it begins to run back out of the fill hole. Loosely replace the plug and start the engine. Allow it to warm up to operating temperature. Then, shift the transmission slowly through all gears and back to park. Remove the fill plug and fill the transmission again until it starts to drain back out via the fill. Loosely replace the plug and again run through the gears one more time. Remove the plug and confirm that the level is at the bottom of the fill hole. Basically, if you were to add more, it would run out.

Just a note: Where the filter attaches to the valve body, there is a rubber o-ring (usually orange in color). Make sure to remove the old one and when installing the new one, place a small amount of ATF on it.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe
