Joe,

I have a question about a different vehicle. The vehicle listed above is a wagon. We had a gas smell, someone told us to clean the MAF sensor. We accidentally took off the TPS. Anyway, the gas smell was a loose hose connection. Easy fix. But now we run a code p0122 and p1700. We did nothing else but take it off and put it back. There were no codes before we did that. So, we realized it needs to be adjusted and recalibrated. We have tried several times. We have a multi meter, we set it and go through the relearn process. But it still comes up with the same codes. Idle in park is good 750. But when you put it in gear it drops to 500 and runs rough. It drives but not quite right but the tranny hammers because the idle is off. What are we missing when we reset the TPS?
Thank you for your help.

Hi,

The P1700 simply indicates an issue with the TPS. The P0122 indicates low voltage to the TPS. Disconnect it and inspect the connector. Make sure nothing is pushed in or damaged. Also, confirm there is a good tight connection.

Let me know what you find.

Hi Joe,

I looked at the connections, nothing obvious.
I don't really know what I'm looking for. But plug seems tight, nothing looks broken or corroded.
I'm scared to drive it because of how it runs, but at the same time, I have to get to work.
I'm at a loss.
Thanks for your help.

Renea,

If you feel it is safe to drive, it should be okay. However, we need to get this fixed and I think I may know what happened.

The throttle position sensor is adjustable. When you install it, it can actually be moved in both directions. By turning it, you change the voltage signal to the ECM. As a result, the ECM knows the throttle position and controls the idle and, in this case, transmission.

If when you reinstalled it, you didn't adjust its position properly, that is causing the low voltage signal.

Take a look below at the directions for adjustment. You will need a voltmeter or a digital multimeter to do this. Let me know if you are comfortable doing it. I have directions for doing it with a Subaru scan tool, but it requires a specific cartridge to do it. If you want them, I can send that to you as well.

Let me know if this helps or if you have questions. I will watch for your reply.

Joe

Hi Joe,

We did use a voltmeter and adjusted it and went through the "relearn" process. We did this 3 times. Unplug the battery, etc. But it didn't fix the code. I don't know why. Seems like that should have worked.

Still at a loss. Thank you for your help.

I put a pin in the white wire and touched the red probe to it and the black to the metal for ground. Set it to.52. Then did the relearn process described on you tube. I don't know what the second diagram shows. That isn't what I was checking while turning the TPS. Did I do it wrong?

Oh, I see it says the ignition switch on. I don't believe I did that. Awesome. I will try again in the morning. I bet that will make a difference.
Thanks again, I will let you know.

Hi Joe,
Tried again, your first diagram says take out ECM. What does that mean?
Thank you.

Now it also pulls code, p0731. Any ideas?
Thanks,

Renea,

The new code is likely related. It indicates "gear 1 incorrect ratio" which basically means it's shifting too soon or too late.

Did you retest the circuit? Also, by removing the ECM, I believe you simply need to disconnect it to check for the signal. Connect the multimeter as shown to the correct pins, and then move the TPS (throttle closed) until you get between.45v and.55v. The key must be on, and the throttle completely closed.

Let me know if that is what you have done.

Hi Joe,
We never found the ECM. My husband called a mechanic to see if he could have it looked at. I was trying to avoid that, as it is quite expensive. I just don't understand what the other diagram is. Yes, I did check the circuit again, that's how I got the other code.
Hopefully, the mechanic can fix it for the $170.00 minimum charge.
Thank you for all your help.

Renea,

You are very welcome. Also, I feel very confident this is the issue. I'm not sure which diagram you are referring to. The ECM is located in the vehicle behind the glove box. See the attached pics. That is where you check voltages to adjust the TPS.

Take a look below. Let me know if you want to try again or if you have questions. Also, if you do have a shop do it, let me know if this was the issue. I'm interested in knowing.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe.
The YouTube guy we watched said to check the TPS by inserting a pin into the white wire going into the TPS. So, I never actually did anything with the ECM. We did get it to set the voltage at.52 but apparently it didn't save. The video told us how to recalibrate it after adjustment and we followed it to the letter. I believe that is the problem just can't seem to fix it. I will let you know tomorrow if it gets fixed.
Thank you,
Renea

Hi Joe,

So apparently, we didn't have the fins lined up properly, that's why setting it wouldn't work. It was open instead of closed.
Thank you,
