I read an eerily similar description of my problem about an 88 that wouldn't run without pumping the gas pedal. Changed fuel filter, it was filthy. Thoroughly checked fuel pump, it's fine. Removed air cover and veiwed what seemed like not enough fuel coming in, but not sure. There is no choke, it's some sort of cylinder that moves forward and opens when accelorator is pumped. The problem started suddenly. I drove car to work, it ran great as always. Got in to leave and it acted like it was cold, but never did correct itself. I nursed it home by pumping the gas the entire way. After a couple of leg cramps managed to get it home to start looking at it. EGR? Another sensor or vacuum? All the vacuum hoses look pretty good as I've checked all that I could a couple of times.
