2002 Toyota Rav4 Is it time to fix the clutch?

Transmission problem
2002 Toyota Rav4 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 135000 miles

My Rav4s clutch feels like it is getting 'worn' down so to speak. Especially after it has been sitting for sometime, or in the mornings, as soon as I start to take off in first, it stutters and lags as first starts to engage and pickup speed. 2nd is better but there is almost no 'space' between letting up off the clutch til the gear engages. All the way to the floor is the only engaged mode now, and as soon as it comes off, the gear is engaged. My father says I will need to fix the clutch soon (it used to be theirs), but in the past my experience when you are having issues getting it in gear then the clutch is out...but I was a teen then and had no clue about caring for my vehicle, maybe that is past the point of forseeing it needed to be fixed 'soon'?
