I have a 1996 Toyota Tacome V6, 3.6? maybe the only one they put in that year, 5 speed extended cab 4X4 SR5 with 42000 miles. The truck just recently started runnubg bery poorly. backfiring in the engine compartment and loosing power. Consequently about the same time the speedodometer qiut working. I purchased a code scanner and it gave me a code of 0500 which shows as a (VSS) Vehicle Speed Sensor. after an exhasutive search I was unavble to locate a VSS on the vehicle. Everyone I talk to say it has an electronic speedodometer. The sppedodometer cable was easly located after I stopped looking for an electronic sensor. The plastic gear was damaged but I donot see how a mechanical part could cause the VSS code or teh rough running of the vehicle. I have reset teh check engine light and it continues to come on and shows the VSS. Any hael would be greatly appreciated Thanks Tim

Better look again it has a VSS located on the transmission-you are not looking for a cable-you are looking for a wire connector that has 3-wires on it.

the only electronic sensors I find are the backup lilghts, the two o2 sensors and the electronics going to the 4X4 engaging motor. there are no other wires going to the transmission unless they are on top of the transmission which is near impossible to get to without dropping the transmission. I aslo have see a wiring diagram that indicated that the VSS might be at the rear tires on both sides I do not know what yaer vehicle it was, (something I found here in cyberspace). Continued work on teh vehicel has discovered that the rough idle goes away after approximately fifteen minutes. While the vehicle is running rough it goes through cycles running fine then running rough for the 15 minutes, during this time it smokes alot. I was told possibly a cold start injector, however this started while I was driving down the road and the vehicel was already warmed up. Now it seems to do it only when it is first started.

Thanks Tim
