1986 4x4 toyota pickup with 150,000 miles. R22 engine. Riuns great but both the charge engine and brake dash warning lights came on today. They both come on at the same time, flicker and go back off after a few minutes. Process starts again in a few minutes. Truck seems to run and start fine.

Sounds like the alternator is on its way out. To make sure of this you can do a couple of checks. If you have access to a Multi/volt meter you can check the output with the meter set on DC volts. Connect the meter to the battery( postive to postive and negtive to negtive) with all accessories off you should have a reading between 13.2 to 14.8. If the readings are out of specs the alternator is bad. Next take a reading with all the accessories on and the voltage should be 13.2 or higher. If not replace the alternator. If you have access to a inductive ammeteror similar tester, you can measure the amp output of the alternator. Place the meter around the heavy output wire of the alternator. This is the red wire that goes from the alternator to the battery. You should get a reading of around 10 amps with no load (accessories off) and the amperage should keep increasing as you turn on each accessories. Good luck hope I'll been helpful :) [/img]
