1990 Toyota Truck

I have the 2.4 litre engine, with around 166k. The speedometer has stopped working, so I disconnected it from the transmission and spun the shaft, and the speedometer registers. Is the cable splines worn, or is ther something else in the transmission?

Have done that several times now, always rechecking the speedo cable, figured its the weak link. Is the driven gear anything that can wear out?
