I have a 1987 pickup, 22R with 106000. Engine starts easy, runs fine when accelerating. At idle it is rough ("lopes?"), Lots of black smoke, smell of gas, and when I let off the gas if will stutter and backfire, plugs are black and sooty, but not oily, (rich?) This started shortly after I installed new plugs, wires, rotor, cap, fuel filter and pump. Thanks

Did you use OEM sparkplugs?. Did you gap the plug? Make sure you have good connections at both ends of the plugwire and routed properly. Inspect the choke plate opening could be closing up. Carb could need an A/F mixture adjustment.

Check the EGR for carbon and look for disconnected vacuum hose, also the PVC valve.
