Hello. What is the proper way to shift from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive and back to 2? I have manual locking hubs. Also is any harm done driving in 4 wheel drive "without" the front hubs locked?
Thanks for your time.

Hi there,

You should come to a stop, foot on brake, change to 2-4 or 4-2 drive off. If you are trying to shift on the move, even just crawling you stand a very good chance of destroying the transfer box. As for driving in 4X4 with the front hubs out, as long as front unis are OK there is no real issue as only the front diff centre is turning, nothing else will happen, just make sure that the diff breather is not blocked as if the pressure in the front diff gets to high, you may blow an axle shaft seal. If the front drive shaft is a bit second hand you may feel a vibration. When your going off road, lock your hubs in when your on the dirt and leave them in untill your back on the tar, this will not be a problem in 2 or 4 wheel drive. If you leave your hubs in lock and drive on the tar in 2wd the steering will be a bit heavy and you may feel a bit of vibration, but this will not be a problem in the short term.
