This car ran extremely well but eventually the battery and starter began to fail. During that period I repeatedly jumpstarted the car with a battery charger. After replacing the starter, igniter, plugs, distributor cap, wires, and resbuilding the carburetor the car struggles to start, backfires, and quickly stalls. I don't know what to try next, coil possibly? Any ideas?

Hi there,

you would benefit with a diagnose run on an oscilloscope, this will give your mechanic all the information on the ignition system and coupled with an exhaust analyzer this will be the best way to pin point your problem.

if the car is not yet able to get to a shop now?

Hi there,

I would be checking the ignition timing with a test light, just put the the test light on the neg side of the coil and turn the engine by hand with the ignition on, may be take out the plugs to make this easier, the light will turn on when the coil fires, so wind it slowly and watch the timing marks as you approach No 1 TDC the light should come on around 5Deg BTDC this should be ok for a start, crank the engine and check for a strong blue spark, check fuel is up to the carby as well, start here.
