1992 Toyota Landcruiser Four Wheel Drive Automatic 263000 miles

I stopped at a red light, when I went to take off it made a very loud grinding sound and would not go. I got it in low 4 wheel drive and it went very slowly and made no noise but acted like it did not want to go, now I put it in high and it is ok but if it is put back in neutral 4 wheel drive the grinding continues and it will not move. Any idea what that may be?

I need a bit more infomation.

Is the noise there all the time, (main selector neutral and T/fer neutral?

Is the noise with gear selected any or all? And T/fer in neutral.

Is it a full time 4 wheel drive box? (No Free wheeling hubs)

Really there is a serious problem that your mechanic will have to inspect anyway, the more you let it grind the more damage it will do, so don't drive it and let me know what you find with my questions and I should be able to narrow it down a bit.
