I have a 2002 toyota corolla S 4 cylinder 2.0?

I put new half shafts and struts on my car. When I drive I am getting a loud humming noise. When I took the tires off to put back on the old half shafts I noticed the strut assembly has about a quarter inch of play is this normal? Any other seggustions before I put the old shafts back on.

Struts have vertical travel, but should not have lateral travel. Did you tighten down the knuckle bolts and the upper bolts?

I just took it apart again and when I took off the two bottom bolts holding it on. I left the three top ones on. I t swings freely and I can spin it. Is this normal. Should the top of the spring be and an angle or straight when it is in the strut?

Thanks
Bill

It will move with the knuckle bolts loose, but with them torqued, you should not have anything but vertical travel.
It is possible that the top is installed incorectly. Unbolt the 3 hold down nuts and rotate the upper part of the strut to the next bolt hole, see if it seats properly, if not rotate again.
