1989 Toyota Corolla station wagon. 1.6L, 2bbl. carb. 128K mi.
Recently the no.1 spark plug blew out of it's hole while driving. I checked compression, it's good and the plug hole threads weren't damaged. Replaced all plugs and dist. cap and plug wires. The no.1 cylinder does not fire. I have performed the spark check by grounding the plug to the engine and it checks out fine, but when the plug is inserted into the block and the plug wire is removed there is no change in engine performance. I also attached an inductive tachometer to the plug wire. There is no reading when the plug wire is attached to the spark plug but when removed there is a reading. I performed ohms tests on the ignition coil and signal generater and they are both within specs.

You have a problem with no.1 cyclinder-what you're doing is performing a cylinder balance-when you remove the wire the idle should go down and runs rough but its not doing it. Recheck the compression

Do this swap the wire around and make sure you route it correctly to prevent crossfiring and see what happens.

Or do a resistance check ofthat wire anything over 30K's replaced it.

Good Luck
