Sounds fine when in park and idling. When put in gear to go in reverse or drive makes noise. Was told that I need to replace drive belt and tensioner and will cost me $442. Does this make sense or am I being taken for a ride?

No it doesn't make sense.

Get another opinion and have them check the CV axles, suspension components and fluid levels in trans. and differential

theses symtoms are very common on late model corolla,s. they have a very poor serpentine belt tensioner. aLMOST ALL OWNERS REPLACE THEM WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY. YOU WILL NEED TO SLIGHTLY JACK UP THE ENGINE TO GET THE BOLT OUT BECAUSE IT HITS THE FENDER WELL.
