When I shift into 2nd or 3rd, the engine sounds like I'm in neutral until it grabs hold and allows me to accelerate.

What could the problem be?

I would say that if the clutch pedal is firm and engages from a stop, but you have slippage when accelerating and shifting into 2-3, it may be a bad motor mount causing a bind.

You also should check the slave cylinder (fluid level) and the clutch fork for binding.

You could also have a bad clutch, bent fingers, bent clutch fork etc.
