My corolla was having a rattiling sound from the engine during acceleration and startup. Like a sticky lifter or timing issue. Today while driving at 60mph and going to accelerate to 65 the engine did not respond and seemed to loose power. Ater pulling to the side of the interstate it stalled. I let it sit for awhile and then tried starting it. The engine started but there was a knocking kind of sound. I shut it down. I had it towed to my home and checked compression. Cylinders 1-4 read 150psi and 4 read approx. 142. I also checked the cam shafts and the valves appeared to be operating correctly. The check engine lite has been lit for awhile and the code I had read was for the O2 sensors. Could I be having a VVTi issue?

Could be a VVTi issue, engaging at the wrong RPM or a stuck solenoid, but I would also replace the O2 sensors and perform a backpressure test on CAT. If clogged it could cause similar symptoms, and failed O2 sensors will cause a rich condition, overheating the CAT and possibily melting the material inside causing a blockage.

I would also check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.
