Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Toyota Corolla 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Felt something different in driving of car--vibration through gas pedal at times & rattling sound. Checked oil & it was mostly gone!! Now, I've had oil changed & there is smoke coming out tail pipe when started. This is all new & unexpected (i change oil regularly!). Car only has 77,800 miles on it. Mechanic is telling me there must be problem with rings or bent valve. Is that the only explanation??????

It is either burning it or leaking it. Check the engine compartment top and bottom for oil leaks.
Look at front and rear main seal, oil pan and valve cover.

The smoke on startup (if it only smokes for a minute or so) is usually valve seals.

You can perform a compression test to evaluate the rings.

But running the engine without oil, usually results in problems.
