two questions -
the check engine light does not show up, when the ignition key is inserted.
appreciate if you could give me options of what is wrong?
i need to get the vehicle inspected at NJ. Is this very important to pass vehicle inspection.

When you turn the key to "on" the check engine light should illuminate to show the bulb is working.
Hopefully the bulb is burnt out and simply needs to be replaced.
Have the PCM scanned looking for any error codes. The instrument panel would have to be removed to get to the light.
It could also be the wiring to the light or a short/open circuit in the IP circuit board.
Check the fuses while your at it.
