Transmission problem
2000 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Manual 88000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all, Today I was driving on the hw and heard a grounding noise for less then a second and then everything seemed fine. Later when I went out down the street about two miles I was in line at Mcd's and the car would not move. Nothing worked reverse, dive, low or 2nd. Had to push it to a parking spot where I shut it off. Could smell something but started her up again and I could drive it for only a couple of minutes. It did the same thing. Needless to say, I did the same thing shut it off and cool down and got to work which was only about 50 feet and left it there. I know its the transmission but how can I drive it for a bit and then it drop. Also, do you have an idea of how much this is going to cost me. The car is only 8 yrs old and has only 88000 miles on it. Thanks!

Inspect the axle seal area on the trans. looking for leakage.
You may have run the differential out of fluid (leaking out the seals).
Also check trans. fluid level with engine running (in Park).
If trans or differential is bad, you may be better off finding a used trans. at a junkyard.
A rebuild and install can easily run $3,000, or more.
