Brakes problem
1999 Toyota Corolla 133K miles

After my car has been sitting for 8 hours, the first time I use the brakes I can feel, and hear, one 'pop' from my brake pedal. I think the pop sound comes from the rear brake. Yesterday, there were two 'pops' in a time frame of one second apart, possibly one from the rear and the other from the front. This 'pop' only happens after the car has been sitting for long period of time. I took the car to mechanic yesterday and they cleaned front and rear brakes, said everything looked in order. The brakes are performing without problems otherwise.

Hi emilyd,

Generally if there is any fluid leakage from the wheel cylinders in a brake drum system, the brake shoes will stick when the parking brakes are applied and left over a period of time.

Releasing the handbrake only releases the cable whereas the shoes will stick and when you move off, it will seem heavy till the pop sound when the shoes releases themselves.

Cleaning the brakes will solve the problem but it will come back later if the leakage is not rectified.

Disc brakes should not have this problem.
