1998 Toyota Corolla Engine white smoke

Two weeks ago my car started to act funny. It would take me two-three turn to have my car turn over and started. Then last week my car had this white smelly smoke coming from the hood, then my car just died and now the battery is totally dead. No lights come on nothing happens. Then I got a a new battery and the light come on but car does not start at all. I notice when I placed the battery in the car a smoke happen again and a rattle for a little bit. the key was not in the car to start it. Please help
