1998 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl
----------------------------------------------------------------
My car has been making a strange noise for the last two weeks or so. It's coming from the enigine and its a rattling noise. It usually happens when the car is in park or when you have your foot on the brake. The car wasn't making any noise before and now all of a sudden it is making noise. I checked the oil and made sure nothing was loose and I had a tune up about a year ago. I also had the oil changed a few months back so my question is what could be making noise? The car works fine but the noise has me worried.

If the noise is "pinging" which would sound like striking a steel vise with a ball peen hammer, then it could be serious. The car is equipped with a timing chain rather than a belt, but the chain could be streached, or a bad crank/cam sensor could be adding too much advance causing the pinging.

It could be a loose heat shield, or a colapsed motor mount.

I would get it in to the garage of your choice to get to the bottom of the problem.
