Electrical problem
1997 Toyota Corolla Two Wheel Drive Automatic 98000 miles

How does one remove and replace a starter in a 97 Toyota Corolla? It is my understanding that the veh must be put on jack stands, the passenger tire must be removed and that the starter removal has to take place from underneath but that the new starter can be installed from the top.

What length extension wrench should be used to remove the bolts and what size? What else do I need to know?

It is easier to remove from underneath and install, but whichever is easier for you.

Disconnect the negative battery BEFORE you start the procedure.

Remove the plastic stone shields for better access.

Disconnect the power cable and solenoid connection, remove starter bolts (usually 14mm), install new starter, make electrical connections, re-attach neg. battery terminal.

Starter is usually held in place with 2 bolts, one faces left side and one right side.
