1996 Toyota Corolla Speed does not respond to the accelerat

Dear,

My car is 1996 Toyota corolla (manual) with 232k mileage. On stepping (even slowly) the accelerator, the RPM increases irregulary making noise but the speed increases very slowly.

Whar are the possible causes of this problem?
