This used Corolla has the 1.8L engine. Does this engine have a timing belt (needing to be replaced) or a timing chain?

Will noises be audible warning that the timing belt is about to fail?

Can the timing belt be changed without removing the head?

It has a belt. You do not have to remove the head to change the belt. It should be changed every 60-70K.
If you intend to do it yourself, buy a Haynes manual. It will give you the correct procedure, so you can see what you are getting into before you start.

There MAY be some noise before the belt goes, but do not depend on it.
There should be a rubber/plastic inspection cover so you can look at the condition of the belt.
But if you are unsure of when it was changed, change it.
