Engine Performance problem

Two weeks back my car's battery. went dead (after 3 years of use) and I had to jump start the car and have replaced the battery since then sometimes the Engine Check lights turns on and goes off and it idles erratically. Sometimes it would start and stall. When it happens it smells like raw gasoline. However, sometimes engine also behave nicely and smoothly.
What could be the probable cause and solution?
