When you turn AC on you should hear the AC clutch engage, if not the clutch or freon is low.

Is this R12 or R134a refrigerant?

AC system repair is best left to professionals. Special toos are required and freon must be recaptured and not vented into atmosphere.

If an R12 system, it is best to convert to R134a. R12 is getting hard to find and VERY (and I mean VERY) expensive.
