My sister has a 92 Corolla and somehow the gears will not shift. It is currently stuck in reverse. My friends say that it is not the transmission problem that it is the gear shaft. If that is the case, how should we repair it. Is there a way to figure out if it is the transmission vs the gear shaft?

Thanks

Hi there,

Is the detente button on the shifter pressing in? This button lifts a lever that locks out the selection of gears by accident. You will have to dismantle the cover over the gear shifter to inspect this lock out, unfortunitly i do not have a picture to send you. The other way to check is to jack up the car, disconcert the shifter linkage from the box, and manually shift the gears to see if it is free or locked up, it should click through the gears easily, don't do this with the engine running. I would be looking at the lock out mechinisam first.
