1992 Toyota Corolla CV axles go in opposite directions

The CV axles were recently installed and were running good but recently the car has been really slow, there's a loud grinding noise and when I lifted the car up I turned the wheel and noticed that one side will go forward while the other one will go backwards. Why would this happen? And is it the transmission or the axles put incorrectly?
