i have the haynes manual, yet its a little confusing. it tells me to put the exhuast cam knock pin at nine o clock and later to have it at tdc with the bearing cap. is it to be at nine o clock to set the intake cam, then be put at tdc to set the timing?

Rotate the engine via the balancer bolt to TDC #1. There is a mark on the lower timing belt gear that matches a mark on the oil pump housing.

You will have to get the water pump pulley off or at least loosened to get the timing belt cover off. I just loosen the water pump bolts before I start, then remove them. That allows me to get the cover off without raising the engine (to get the waterpump pulley off). In other words, you do not have to take the WP pulley off to get the timing belt off (as the manual describes).

You will have to disconnect the right front motor mount off to get the old belt off and put the new one on.

You do not need to adjust the camshafts during this precedure, sound like you are reading the procedure for removing the camshafts.
