Okay so my car is a great car, my dad bought it new back in '90 and I got it from him a few years back. Its been kept up very well with frequent tune ups and timely oil changes etc. So a few things are a little off as of recently the biggest thing thtat worries me is that when I turn the car on (specifically when I accelerate) I hear a whirring noise. When I checked under the hood, it seemed to be coming from the right side of the car (passenger). Another odd thing is that when I idle like in traffic for a while it gets like two or three times hotter than normal. Also I think either my gauge is off or I am getting pretty bad gas mileage. Sometimes its sputters and fights me a little when I accelerate but not too often. I've checked the fluids and they are all normal. Though I'm due for a oil change its not super dier. Please help, suffering college student with no mula to play around with expensive tests at the mechanic. Thanks!

Inspect the waterpump for leaks, especially at the weep hole, if you see any coolant, replace the pump.

Make sure the cooling fan is working, if you turn the AC on the fan should come on, slow speed at first.
If the fan does not come on, disconnect the fan switch connector, the fan should come on and run continously, if it doesn't come on then the fan is bad, wiring to it or a relay/fuse.

If the fans are working and waterpump is OK, then I would replace the thermostat (use a Toyota part).

I would also purchase a Haynes manual for your car, it will give you procedures for diagnosing problems as well as repair procedures.
