i know that an alternator produces AC current thats converted into DC current my question is what kind and how much AC current is an average let say old style 65 AMP alternator capable of making?

I believe it would divide by 10, so 65 amps at 12 volts would be 6.5 amps at 120V.

so with that said you could use one or several as a generator to run household appliances?

Well, yes, but you would have to convert the DC to AC, and have something to drive the alt.

Depending on how many watts you are looking for, it would probably be cheaper to buy a gas generator.
