Fuel gauge reading "E" with full tank of gas

I lost my water pump and had the garage replace the timing belt at the same time. After the work was done I got a call from the garage saying my gas gauge reads "E" even though there is gas in the tank. I suspect the mechanic disconnected an electrical wire from the fuel gauge sending unit in the tank to the gauge in the dashboard. Am I correct or did I lose my fuel gauge sending unit inside the gas tank? I have a 1991 Toyota Camry with 120,000 miles.

Thanks for your help.

You can test your gauge by installing a 45k resistor in-line on your sender wire the gauge should read around half a tank if it does then suspect a bad sender
