My high mileage Camry 2.4 (AT) is making what sounds like gear noise which increases with speed. It is car speed releated, it still occurs if I put the car in N and coast. If I rev engine at slow speeds it does not change.

It is felt the the steering wheel. I have rotated tire with no change. I have checked the brakes- nothing found. With both front wheels off the ground and trans in N, rotating the wheels I can not feel anything strange.

Any ideas of where I should look next?

Thanks for the reply, no steering does not affect it at all. Axle bearing is what I was hoping for. It reminds me of a diff failure on an old RWD car I once had.

If no change in pitch then wheel bearings may not be problem. Most likely a Diff bearing. Jack front wheels off ground place on jack stands. Run car in gear noise present? Hear it from Diff? Place long screwdriver on Diff next to ear will pick up noises
