i have an '02 camry with a 4 cyl engine and it's a manual. the mileage on it is about 140,000 miles. my problem is when i am at a stop with the car on and i try to shift from the 1st gear into the 2nd and so on, my car seems to rev high, but barely takes off. now it does actually go, but it is so slow and takes some time to go faster and the speedometer fluctuates and revs real high them drops low and this gets worse when i go up a hill too. can anyone help me with figuring out what this problem might be? i was told maybe it's the clutch, but i'm not sure and i want to make sure before i go spend a lot of money to repair this.

Sounds like you need a new clutch assy.

I also have a 2002 Camry (120,000 miles). I was thinking first that one should check the clutch fluid level, since it is a hydraulic clutch. The fluid level has to go down as the material on the clutch wears down, just as it does on brakes (which would mean that the clutch is wearing but is not necessarily yet at a replacement level of wear).
