i want to know what does a egr valve do and what can happen if not repaired!

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation and the valve is for recycling the exhaust gas into the intake when the combustion of the engine is not clean enough.
It is an emission control item and if it fails, you would fail the smog test.
Prolonged usage if the EGR is faulty can cause engine misfiring, shorter spark plug lifespan and carbon buildup.
