Engine Performance problem
1999 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

just drove vehicle 1000 miles no problem in one trip, previously ran very well. now after driving locally a mile or so it stalls and wont restart, cranks normally, bad smell like real old fuel when it happens. if it sits about 15 mnts or so or longer it starts and runs well but shortly stalls again and wont start. on highways runs fine, never stalls at higher speeds. stalling is random at low speeds, it kinda chugs and you know its going to stall. just changed water pump and timing belt, unrelated. drove 125 miles straight, no problem, once off interstate it stalled and had to sit to restart. Catalytic converter? no check engine light, no overheating, good strong motor, plugs dark and even, good even compression all four cylinders. no smoke, just bad smell and wont restart. did not throw a code. Im baffled, car has 145000 easy miles, car is well cared for. newer o2 sensor. please any help greatly appreciated. used to have a shop, but work on pre-1972 only
