Electrical problem
1997 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Automatic

Where can I find the Starter on a 1997 Toyota Camry LX and how can I use a DMM to test to see if it's working properly? My car isn't cranking and dash lights goes dim when I turn on head lights. Battery is good. Not to sure about the alternator. Any clue what might be the cause?

Locate your Transmission, look down at trans, try to see where axle shaft goes in. Starter should be in that area. If not, look down under oil filter to the left, may be in that area. Test for 12 volts at the batt. Pos. Wire on starter. Got 12 v.? Jump across system w/ remote starter switch. If you not have a remote stater switch, you can use a couple peices of wire. Wire has to be the same size or bigger than the one you will unplug from starter solenoid mounted on top of starter. It is a single wire. A connector like the one that plugs to solenoid is good, get one @ a auto store same size, put on jumper wire, plug jumper wire into solenoid. Hook other half to Batt. Pos. Touch your 2 jumpers together, see if starter runs. If it does, starter o.K.. Get Alternater checked reguardless.
