Car was driven without oil on highway until it overheated. Remaining oil looked very thick (added 3 qts). Engine starts but has lots of clicking noises (hydraulic lifters?) and won't rev up without excessive noises. If oil lines are gummed up, is there a way to flush them without disassembly.

I would do a compression check before doing any other work or spending any money.
If the compression is too low you will have to make a decision on whether to scrap car completely, rebuild engine, or put in a used engine.
