Hi there, I have been unsure about using overdrive or not in my auto 97 Camry, the more people I ask the more confused I get. On one side they're saying that using overdrive all the time saves you fuel and is better for your engine and on the other side they're saying it's only for highway driving and will ruin my gearbox and motor in a short time span if left on all the time. I don't know what to believe there are valid points on both sides. What’s best for the life of my car??

Use the overdrive.

It is designed to disengage if it puts an excessive load on the engine, and it will save fuel.

The only time you may want to disengage it is if going down long hills, so as to use the engine to slow down and save brakes. Like shifting from 5th gear to forth, same thing, or if you need additional acceleration.

Use it in city and highway, and don't be concerned about it.

No.

The system is designed to upshift/downshift at specified loads on engine.
Since these are small engines with limited torque, the OD will disengage under load (passing car, going up steep grade).

Not using it will cause engine to turn additional RPM, putting more stress on engine.
