1997 Toyota Camry 6 cyl 126,00 miles

My 1997 Toyota Camry check engine light came on. I have noticed it driving sort of strange lately. Mainly the idle has been off. One day, the car would not start on me, finally it did. NOW, there is a bad smell coming from it, and my friend told me to get it checked out. My mom suggested it be the catalytic converter. What kind of smell would it be emitting if it was, and is it safe for me to drive it? Thanks

It is not possible for us the determine smell from a computer screen. There are so many of them. Is it oil burning smell, coolant smell, fuel smell, rotten egg smell, etc.

Do not start replacing parts before any diagnostic. As the check engine light is on, you really should have the computer scanned for codes. While they do not perform the service, each CSK/O'Reilly store has partnered up with a shop that will perform the service for free for CSK/O'Reilly customers. Ask them. When you have the codes, please post the code numbers here.
