My car is 1996 camry with 146,000 miles and I recently drove across country. I had a light on and took car to garage who said I had a cracked axle boot. They repaired it ($300) and now it is leaking transmission fluid. I had a diagnostic done and the second shop said they could not replace side axle seal because axle is stuck inside transmission. They were afraid they would break it and said return to original shop. Also they gave me a list of other repairs that needed to be done – oil pan gasket leak, crank seal/cam seal leak-- $735; with other recommendations amounting to another $760. They are oil filter, transmission flush power steering flush, coolant flush, fuel injection service, fuel filter replacement, replace belts, cv axle boot, clean & adjust rear brakes, brake fluid flush. I am retired with limited low income. My question: is it worthwhile to have these repairs done and how many miles could I expect or should I just try to repair the transmission leak and sell the car and get a newer one.

have the shop that installed the axle fix the axle seal if it is on the side they replaced axle. they damaged it. if you have limited income dont get the fluids changed. they are just upselling you every service known to man. my advice is to stick with one shop you trust, do some research with neighbors and friends. the local shop? they rely on repeat business and cannot afford a bad reputation from rolling a customer. just my opinion.
