Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Toyota Camry 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

my 96 camry waqs running good but was having trouble taking off while in gear.
my daughter was driving it and she says it just popped and smoke came out from the hood then it stopped moving she claims the engine was still running bit the car was not moving.
well the engine has oil splattered on the outside but oil level is full so is the transmission level
any advice on what to start chexking? thanks
