my car did not pass smog due to the system maintenance light and the HO emissions and the NO. What does this mean and what needs to be fixed.

System maintenance light? Probably your check engine light is ON. If this light is ON, automatic you failed the smog check. Please read the "Check Engine Light" topic on the left side under site menu.
If there is an Autozone Parts Store near you, they will check it for you free using OBD II scanner. The scanner will show a P0? Trouble code. Post that trouble code here with a NEW topic and fellow members can help you why NO and HC gases (not HO) failed. Or what other causes failed you in your smog check. Maybe needs tune up, oxygen sensor, EGR valve malfunction, PCV valve, catalytic converter and/or more. The P0? Trouble code tells us which part needs to be fixed. Also, write how many miles you have in your car in your New topic.
