My parents got the car when I was a kid, and we've had it ever since. It is now my car, and has suddenly decided it does not want to start. When you turn the key, all the lights come on on the dashboard, and that's it- the engine does not even try to turn over. I've gotten a new battery, replaced the connector pieces that connect to the battery, and also had some work done on the neutral safety switch. I was still having problems getting the car to start. Some one informed me it was the starter, and that if you tap it with a hammer it will jiggle something into place and allow the car to turn over. Is it actually the starter that's dying or some other part?

If you hear the relay click when you turn the key to the start position, the either the battery, battery cables, or the starter is bad, if no click, check/replace the starter relay.

Other possibility is the ignition switch.
